Five things the data reveals about this category

Behind the ranking — what the numbers actually mean for brands in the SEO tools space.

Finding 1 The Concentration Pattern

37 tools named by AI. The top 6 alone capture 63% of all 192 mentions.

When 20 realistic buying prompts were submitted to ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, the models collectively named 37 distinct SEO tools. That number sounds like a healthy, competitive market. But the distribution tells a very different story: Ahrefs and Semrush each pulled 27 mentions — 14.1% share of voice apiece — while the 25 tools outside the tracked top 12 shared just 19.3% between all of them. AI does not browse a long tail. It references the shortlist it has been trained to associate with quality and authority in the SEO software category.

This power-law concentration is not accidental. The SEO tools market has a clear tier structure that mirrors enterprise software dynamics broadly: a few platforms with massive content ecosystems, large affiliate footprints, and decade-long presence in practitioner communities sit at the top, while dozens of capable niche tools struggle to register in AI training data at all. Ahrefs and Semrush both run knowledge hubs, YouTube channels with millions of subscribers, and communities that generate hundreds of thousands of third-party mentions annually — exactly the signal density that language models learn from.

Sistrix, the third most-mentioned tool with 24 mentions and 12.5% share of voice, is instructive because it punches well above the size its market cap would suggest. Its strength comes from deep penetration in German-language SEO media, a long-standing presence in agency workflows across the DACH region, and a specialist reputation for visibility index metrics that AI systems have learned to treat as authoritative. Sistrix is the first clear example in this dataset of a regional specialist achieving top-tier AI recognition through depth rather than breadth of content coverage.

Below position six, the concentration curve drops sharply. SE Ranking at 9.4%, Seobility at 6.8%, and Screaming Frog at 6.2% still achieve meaningful presence, but then the curve flattens into a long tail where tools like SpyFu, Mangools, and PageRangers each manage only 2.1% despite being legitimate, well-reviewed products used by thousands of teams. For these providers, being objectively good at the craft is not sufficient for AI recommendation. The question is not whether they work — it is whether enough credible sources are saying so in places AI can read.

Takeaway

The SEO tools category is already highly concentrated in AI — if your brand is not in the top 6 by mentions, you are competing for scraps from a long tail that AI models rarely visit. Building AI visibility now, before positions calcify further, is not optional.

Finding 2 The Visibility Range

From 75% AI visibility down to 50% — a 25-point gap among the five tracked providers.

Among the five specifically tracked providers — SISTRIX, Seobility, XOVI, Ryte, and PageRangers — the AI visibility scores range from a high of 75% down to 50%. In absolute terms a 25-point gap might seem modest, but in the context of AI recommendation behaviour, that gap translates into a fundamentally different probability of being included in any given response. A provider at 75% visibility is named in three out of every four relevant prompts; a provider at 50% is named in only one in two. Over the full prompt set of 20 queries, that difference amounts to roughly five additional AI recommendations — each one a potential customer touchpoint.

SISTRIX and Seobility both achieved the maximum 75% visibility score, yet their share of voice figures differ: SISTRIX at 20.0% versus Seobility at 17.6%. This is a meaningful nuance — visibility tells you how often a tool gets named at all, while share of voice tells you how prominently it features relative to every other mention in the dataset. SISTRIX appears in three out of four prompts, but when it does appear it tends to be alongside fewer competing tools, giving each individual mention more relative weight. Seobility matches that presence rate but competes in slightly more crowded response fields.

What drives the visibility gap in the SEO tools category is, above all, documentation density and review platform saturation. SISTRIX has an extensive German-language knowledge base, detailed feature documentation, and a well-established presence in specialist publications like t3n, SISTRIX Blog, and OMT. These create the kind of structured, authoritative content that language models preferentially draw on when forming recommendations. Seobility has built a similar reputation through its free-tier SEO checker tool, which drives enormous amounts of user-generated mentions and how-to content across forums, YouTube tutorials, and agency case studies.

XOVI at 62.5% and Ryte and PageRangers both at 50% reveal what happens when a tool has solid practitioner recognition but thinner third-party content coverage. XOVI has a loyal German agency user base but generates comparatively fewer English-language mentions, limiting its cross-lingual AI signal. Ryte, despite being acquired by HubSpot — which should theoretically boost its content distribution — appears to be in a transitional state where its independent brand authority has diluted. PageRangers is an emerging tool that has not yet built the review and mention density required to reliably appear in AI responses across diverse prompt types.

Takeaway

In the SEO tools category, AI visibility is driven by documentation quality, review platform density, and multi-language content coverage — not by product quality alone. Providers below 75% have identifiable content gaps that can be closed with a deliberate GEO strategy.

Finding 3 How Prompt Type Shapes Winners

Different questions unlock different winners — and the same tool rarely dominates all four prompt types.

The 20 prompts in this study covered four structurally distinct question types: best-of questions (e.g., "What are the best SEO tools for agencies?"), head-to-head comparisons (e.g., "Ahrefs vs. Semrush — which is better?"), alternative-seeking queries (e.g., "What are the alternatives to Semrush?"), and use-case or vertical prompts (e.g., "Best SEO software for SMEs in Germany"). Each type activates a different retrieval pattern in AI systems, and the winners shift accordingly. Understanding these patterns is the foundation of any serious AI content strategy for an SEO tool vendor.

Best-of prompts strongly favour Ahrefs and Semrush — the two global platforms with the broadest feature sets and the most extensive practitioner endorsement content. These tools are mentioned almost universally in "top 10 SEO tools" style responses because AI has absorbed thousands of such listicles, blog posts, and comparison guides. Sistrix consistently enters best-of lists framed around the German market or agency context. Seobility and SE Ranking appear most reliably in best-of lists filtered by budget or team size — their free tiers and affordable pricing plans generate specific content clusters that AI models draw on for "best affordable" or "best for small business" framings.

Comparison prompts produce the most concentrated responses. When users ask AI to compare Ahrefs, Semrush, and SISTRIX head-to-head, the model focuses narrowly on those three tools and rarely volunteers others. This makes comparison prompts the highest-value prompt type for top-tier providers — they get exclusive attention — but the lowest-value for everyone else. Alternative-seeking prompts, by contrast, create openings for mid-tier tools: when users ask for Semrush alternatives, Sistrix, SE Ranking, Seobility, and even Mangools regularly appear. This is where challenger brands can build genuine AI presence by owning the "alternative to X" content space aggressively.

Use-case and vertical prompts are the most interesting frontier. When the prompt specifies a context — agencies in Germany, e-commerce SEO, local SEO for service businesses — the ranking shifts substantially. Screaming Frog, which sits at only 6.2% overall share of voice, punches up significantly in technical SEO and site-audit prompt contexts because it has near-universal recognition as the specialist crawler tool. XOVI and Sistrix both benefit from prompts that specify a German-language or DACH market context. Ryte has historically owned the technical content quality space but appears to be losing ground in this prompt type as its brand identity blurs post-acquisition. For providers outside the top four, use-case specificity is the clearest path to meaningful AI presence.

Takeaway

SEO tool brands outside the global top two should focus their GEO content strategy on alternative-seeking and use-case prompts — these are the prompt types where position is still contestable, and owning a specific niche or market context creates durable AI visibility that best-of competition cannot easily displace.

Finding 4 Sentiment Signals

Zero negative mentions across the entire dataset — but positive framing is far from evenly distributed.

One of the most striking findings in this dataset is that not a single provider received a negative mention across all 192 AI responses. This is consistent with how generative AI currently handles commercial software recommendations: models are trained to be helpful and constructive, and they tend to present tools in neutral-to-positive framing when responding to purchase-consideration prompts. What this means in practice is that the competitive battle in the SEO tools category is not being fought on negative ground — no AI is actively discouraging use of any tool. Instead, the battle is entirely about who gets mentioned positively and who gets mentioned with tepid neutrality.

Ahrefs leads not just in raw mentions but in positive sentiment share: 16 of its 27 mentions carried positive framing, with only 11 neutral. That is a 59% positive rate — the highest among the top four providers. The language AI uses when recommending Ahrefs tends to include specific capability endorsements: best-in-class backlink database, industry-leading keyword explorer, trusted by SEO professionals worldwide. These are not generic descriptions; they reflect the precise language that Ahrefs itself has seeded through its academy content, case studies, and community presence, which AI has absorbed as authoritative signal.

Sistrix shows a notably strong positive sentiment rate: 15 positive out of 24 mentions, a 62.5% positive rate — actually the highest in the dataset by percentage. This is driven by a very specific type of content: German-language SEO publications and agency blogs that write about Sistrix with concrete outcome language — "our clients saw X% visibility improvement," "we track all our rankings through Sistrix" — exactly the testimonial and results-oriented framing that makes AI characterise a tool positively rather than just adequately. SE Ranking also shows strong positive sentiment at 14 of 18 mentions positive (78%), suggesting its positioning around affordability and outcome delivery resonates well in AI training data.

By contrast, XOVI shows a sentiment split that warrants attention: only 2 positive mentions against 5 neutral ones, a positive rate of just 29%. This does not mean XOVI is poorly regarded by practitioners — the tool has a loyal agency user base in Germany. It means that the content ecosystem around XOVI is predominantly descriptive rather than evaluative. Product pages, feature lists, and pricing documentation generate neutral AI mentions. Customer success stories, outcomes-driven case studies, and third-party review synthesis generate positive ones. The gap in XOVI's sentiment profile points directly to a content strategy opportunity: more outcome-focused, third-party-validated content would shift AI framing from neutral to positive.

Takeaway

In a category where no provider earns negative AI mentions, the real differentiator is positive framing — and positive framing is driven by outcome-focused, third-party-validated content. Any SEO tool brand with a high neutral-to-positive ratio has a concrete content strategy lever to pull.

Finding 5 Category AI Maturity

The SEO tools category is in advanced AI maturity — the shortlist is set, but the second tier remains contestable.

Reading the full data picture together, the SEO tools category shows clear signs of what we call advanced AI maturity: a stable, recognised shortlist at the top, significant concentration of mentions among a small group, and a long tail of providers that appear only sporadically across diverse prompt types. This is the natural end state for categories that have been extensively written about, reviewed, and compared online for over a decade. Ahrefs and Semrush are not just software products in the AI's understanding — they are practically synonymous with the concept of SEO analysis software, much like Photoshop became synonymous with image editing at a certain point in its market history.

The maturity of the top tier does not mean the entire category is frozen. The second tier — Sistrix, SE Ranking, Seobility, Screaming Frog — is still actively contested, and the data suggests these positions are earned through continued content investment rather than locked in by historical momentum alone. Sistrix and SE Ranking both show strong positive sentiment ratios and healthy mention counts that indicate an ongoing content ecosystem doing work for them. Screaming Frog's position as the specialist technical crawler, despite its modest overall share of voice, is highly durable because it owns a specific job-to-be-done that AI reliably routes technical audit queries toward.

The emerging tools in this dataset — PageRangers at 50% visibility, Mangools at 2.1% share of voice — reveal something important about what the next wave of AI visibility competition looks like. These tools are not failing to get mentioned because they are unknown; they are failing because their content ecosystems lack the depth and structural variety that AI training favours. Specifically, they lack the combination of: long-form comparison content, independent review aggregation, outcome-focused case studies, and structured data about their features in formats that language models can reliably parse and cite. Closing that gap is a 12-to-24 month content project, not a campaign sprint.

The broader strategic implication for any SEO tool brand is that AI visibility is now a compounding asset — providers who build it early will see their positions reinforce over time as AI models are updated and fine-tuned on increasingly AI-influenced web content. This creates a self-reinforcing loop: tools recommended by AI get more users, generate more reviews and case studies, produce more content about their own methodology, and thereby appear even more frequently in the next training cycle. For the 25 tools sitting in the "andere" (other) bucket with 19.3% combined share of voice split across all of them, the window to break into the tracked shortlist is narrowing with every month of inaction.

Takeaway

The SEO tools category is mature at the top and still fluid in the middle — the opportunity window for second-tier and emerging providers to build durable AI visibility exists today, but it is closing as content ecosystems around established brands continue to compound. Act before the shortlist calcifies completely.
